The Counseling Approach
Growth is best accomplished within the context of relationship. That’s why therapy is so powerful. Through the sharing your story, healing and release can be achieved when together we explore every aspect of our created well-being; life stage & tasks according to your location in life; the systems within our living that help inform your values, goals, decision-making, etc; your emotions & what they are communicating; and instill the hope that comes with restoration.
Therapy is designed to be collaborative, active and educational. As a therapist, I opt to work outside of clinical framework to ensure a tailored approach specific to your individual needs. Client’s should expect to be an engaged participant in the therapeutic process, continuing the on-going work of growth between sessions.
My approach to therapy is holistic, developmental, systemic, emotionally focused, & hope-based:
Holistic | Humans are complex creatures. Within therapy, we will work to address all areas of one’s well-being: Cognitive, Emotional, Biological, Social, & Spiritual. By targeting each of these areas in your life, wholeness is possible.
Developmental | Each individual is in a unique time and space in their life as they enter into the therapy room. It is essential that the we address your location on your personal timeline to navigate essential life task & milestones within your life stage.
Systemic | We are highly social beings. Although you enter into the room as an individual, it is important to understand the complex web of relationships and contexts that have informed you as an individual. Your family, peers, work/school communities, faith families, neighborhood, cultural upbringing, ethnic identity, geographic location, gender, race, & more. Change is best facilitated when we understand ourselves and how we interact with our environments. This is an ongoing dialogue, evolving from childhood into adulthood through sharing our experiences.
Emotionally-Focused | Vulnerability is an essential component to the therapeutic process. When we allow ourselves to be fully known and fully seen in our most authentic emotional experiences we take a beautiful risk of allowing our relational needs to be met. Our emotions are valuable, they are communicating a message about our circumstances, our experience, our internal dialogue. By naming and addressing our emotional experiences with therapeutic dialogue, we facilitate a corrective emotional experience that allows the client to build an emotional vocabulary and skills to successfully request for their needs be met, while also learning to effectively respond to the emotional bids of others.
Hope-based | The world is not as it should be. Pain, & suffering are pervasive, unavoidable realties of the human experience. However, I believe such brokenness does not have the final word. We are in a constant, on-going process of being made new. Often our hardship is the mechanism through which new growth is found. Our pain & suffering bring much value, meaning, and purpose to the human experience. When we diligently walk-through our brokenness, we are able to find new path of application moving forward.

Frequency of sessions is determined collaboratively. A vital counselor-client relationship, paired with active work between sessions on the part of the client, make it possible to reduce frequency of sessions.
